PPS material VS PEEK material

In many oil and energy industries, especially in some high-end chip industries, have been using PEEK material as their common thermoplastic to solve various applications. However, even though PEEK has distinctive properties, these kind of markets has overlooked the “Poor Man’s Peek”, which named from it's lower cost compared with PEEK material. PPS, for example has a higher compressive strength than standard Peek among other benefits.


From many test reports, we know that PPS in natural or in a filled grade polymer is a good option to support tight tolerance and chemical resistance applications in today’s market. Let’s review the strengths and limitations of both PEEK and PPS polymers.


1. Definition of PEEK material and PPS material

What is PEEK material?

PEEK material is a thermoplastic polymer in the polyaryletherketone (PAEK) family. PEEK is a semi-crystalline, thermoplastic with unique mechanical, temperature resistance, and chemical resistance properties that are retained to high temperatures. Ideal for applications where ductility and inertness are critical.

What is PPS material?

Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) thermoplastic is a semi-crystalline heat resistant polymer that has a simple chemical structure made from benzene and sulfur. This resin possess high heat resistance with a melting point of approximately 536°F (280°C) and excellent chemical resistance, along with self-extinguishing without adding flame retardants. PPS is more commonly used when filled with glass or carbon fiber for improved mechanical properties.


2. What are the specific difference between the two materials?

PPS VS PEEK

• PPS material perform higher Chemical Resistance than PEEK material

• PPS material behaves six times better wear resistance than PEEK material

• PPS material extends chemical resistance beyond PEEK material

• PPS material has Lower heat deflection temperature than PEEK material 

 PEEK material has a higher operation temperature degree and a higher tensile strength


The most important advantage on cost-effective aspect.

•PPS material is more cost-effective where PEEK material is over-engineered.



3. What are the similarity between the two materials?

PPS and PEEK are two engineering thermoplastics that are similar in many ways. Both materials are strong, lightweight, and have good high-temperature resistance. 

Both PEEK and PPS are available in a engineered polymer grade to combat the challenges of a high PV (pressure/velocity) in seal or bearing applications.


4. Summarise the similarites and differences between the 2 materials

In conclusion, both PEEK material and PPS material are high-performance thermoplastics that can be used for various applications. However, they have different advantages and disadvantages that make them suitable for different needs and requirements. If you need an insulating material that can withstand high temperatures, high impacts, or high biocompatibility, then PEEK might be the better choice for you. However, if you need an insulating material that can resist chemicals, compression, or pigmentation, then PPS might be the better choice for you. Ultimately, the best insulating material depends on your specific design and application.
